Emerging America: Teaching American History (2005-2008) seeks to increase teacher content knowledge of traditional American history and to enrich historical thinking by teachers and their students. Our first series of professional development events begun in summer of 2006. Browse the links below to learn more about our past programs.
Participants have:
- Deepened their knowledge of historical events and understanding of key themes – freedom, democracy, and opportunity – grounded in current scholarship and presented by veteran historians.
- Explored rich methods for teaching history at elementary, middle, or high school levels.
- Strengthened their historical thinking, including use and analysis of primary sources.
- Learned to use local history to teach national events and themes.
- Experienced teaching technologies, including: Internet, and course management systems.
- Woven literature – including biography – into teaching of history.
- Organized community service-learning projects to present local history on the web.
