Emerging America: Teaching American History (2005-2008) seeks to increase teacher content knowledge of traditional American history and to enrich historical thinking by teachers and their students. Participants have:

• Deepened their knowledge of historical events and understanding of key themes – freedom, democracy, and opportunity – grounded in current scholarship and presented by veteran historians. 
• Explored rich methods for teaching history at elementary, middle, or high school levels.
• Strengthened their historical thinking, including use and analysis of primary sources.
• Learned to use local history to teach national events and themes.
• Experienced teaching technologies, including: Internet, and course management systems.
• Woven literature – including biography – into teaching of history.
• Organized community service-learning projects to present local history on the web.
