2007-08 Program Options

This page describes what participants must do to earn a stipend. 
Participants build their own program to total a minimum of 80, 52, or 50 hours.

LEVEL I – $1,000 Stipend, 80 pdps, at least 80 hours
(Optional $225 fee to register for 3 hours Fitchburg Graduate Professional Development credit)

You MUST complete:

  1. Introduction to Emerging America TAH Program (3 hours)  
  2. Two three-day Summer Colloquia (18 hours each, totaling 36 hours)  
  3. Research at museum or library archives – from approved list or proposed site(s) of your choice (Submit written research notes.) (6 hours)  
  4. School-Year Professional Development – From list “A” below.  (8 hours)  
  5. Personally Designed Professional Development from the following options (9 hours)   Must submit a written plan for this time by 07/10/07:    
    • Develop application for Local History Online Community Service-Learning Team Project (Application due 08/01/07.  Projects completed during 2007-2008 school year.)
    • Additional research at museum or library archive (i.e. beyond  3 above)
    • Write annotated descriptions in VROOM format of history web sites that feature primary sources
  6. Submit a written lesson plan, unit plan, or other teaching activity that features primary sources.  (Using HEC templates, or other format with prior approval.)
  7. Participate in program evaluation  

    SUBTOTAL  62 hours
                                   
IN ADDITION, you MUST complete an additional 18 hours of professional development.  
                  EITHER:
    8.    Attend a third three-day (18-hour) Summer Colloquium        
                  OR complete an additional 18 hours from between these options:
    9.    Additional School-Year Professional Development (6 to 18 hours)     
    10. Additional Personally Designed Professional Development from list
            under “5” above (0-12 hours)

+  SUBTOTAL 18 hours
            TOTAL 80 hours

LEVEL II – $500 Stipend, 67.5 pdps, at least 52 hours
(Optional $225 fee to register for 3 hours Fitchburg Graduate Professional Development credit)

You MUST complete:

  1. Introduction to Emerging America TAH Program (3 hours)
  2. Two three-day Summer Colloquia (36 hours)  
  3. Research at museum or library archives – from approved list or proposed site(s) of your choice (Submit written research notes.) (3 hours).
  4. School-Year Professional Development – From list “A” below.  (6 hours)  
  5. Personally Designed Professional Development from the following options (4 hours)   Must submit a written plan for this time by 07/10/07:

LEVEL III – $500 Stipend, up to 46 pdps, at least 50 hours

You MUST complete:

  1. Introduction to Emerging America TAH Program (3 hours)  
  2. One three-day Summer Colloquium (18 hours)  
  3. Research at museum or library archives – from approved list or proposed site(s) of your choice (Submit written research notes.) (3 hours).
  4. School-Year Professional Development – From list “A” below.  (6 hours)  
  5. Personally Designed Professional Development from the following options (4 hours)   Must submit a written plan for this time by 07/10/07:
    • Develop application for Local History Online Community Service-Learning Team Project (Application due 08/01/07.  Projects completed during 2007-2008 school year.)
    • Additional research at museum or library archive (i.e. beyond “3” above)

            TOTAL 50 hours


 

SUMMER COLLOQUIA
Each three-day Colloquium (9:00-3:30 – includes lunch) features:
-    Seminars led by scholars and museum specialists
-    Hands-on work with primary source documents and artifacts
-    Grade-specific groups
-    Strategies for using Massachusetts biographies, time lines, historical charts and graphs, genre-writing, service-learning, etc. 
-    Web resources, small group, elective sessions

A. 2007-2008 SCHOOL-YEAR PROGRAM OPTIONS
-    One-Day, 6-Hour School-Year Saturday Seminars (4 offered) (lunch included)
-    2-Hour After-school Historical Skills Workshops (6 offered; offered also via videoconference sites around Massachusetts) 
-    2-Hour After-school Social Studies Professional Learning Groups (open-ended number offered) 
-    On-Line Forum Participation (open-ended; on internet-based course management system) 

B. PERSONALLY DESIGNED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
-    Develop application for Local History Online Project (Application due 08/01/07.  Additional stipends provided to funded projects for 2007-2008 school year.)
-    Additional research at museum or library archive (i.e. beyond “3” above)
-    Write annotated descriptions in approved format of history web sites that feature primary sources

- All participants must attend the Program Introduction on June 25 or the make-up session on July 09.  
- Participants may “make up” through School-Year Professional Development no more than one day missed from each summer colloquium.  (For illness or other extreme circumstance only.)
- All professional development and written documentation must be complete by 05/30/08.
